Charter School Opening New Tech Prep Academy in D.C.

Friendship Public Charter School is opening an expanded campus in southeast Washington after an $18 million construction project.

The school is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Wednesday morning for the new Friendship Tech Prep Academy. The school specializes in science, technology, engineering, math and environmental sciences. It currently serves students from sixth grade through 10th grade.

The new campus is located on the site of an abandoned McDonald's restaurant near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Milwaukee Place. The $18 million expansion was finances with District of Columbia charter school revenue bonds. The facility has new labs for robotics, technology, chemistry and biology, as well as a rooftop greenhouse and a green roof.

The school is also near the new Department of Homeland Security headquarters.
