Maryland's Child Safety Seat Law Removes Weight Exemption

Kids younger than 8 will now be required to be in a safety seat unless they are 4'9" or taller

A change in the Maryland's child safety seat law will remove a weight exemption.

The law -- which goes into effect Monday -- will now require kids younger than eight to be in a safety seat unless they are 4'9" or taller.

The change removes the exemption that children weighing more than 65 pounds could ride in an automobile without a safety seat.

State police say National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures show car crashes are the number one killer of children in the United States.
