Man Dies After Car Hits, Drags Scooter

Incident still under investigation

The driver of a scooter died after being struck by a vehicle on Rockville Pike.

The southbound lanes of Rockville Pike between Route 28 and Edmonston Drive were closed Thursday morning as police investigated the crash. Witnesses told police that a Buick hit a scooter and then dragged it for almost a mile.

The accident started in the northbound lanes of Rockville Pike at Edmonston, but the vehicle ended up in the southbound lanes of Rockville Pike near Route 28.

Police said the the driver of the car, Michael Charles Dalton, 22, of Perkasie, Pa., struck the motor scooter from behind. The man who was on the scooter, Roberto Nassar, 30, of the unit block of South Frederick Road, was ejected and hit the windshield of the Buick, and driver of the Buick continued until officers stopped him.

It appeared that the driver of the car may have made a U-turn with the scooter still lodged under the vehicle.

Nassar was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but later died.

He had been riding his scooter home from his job at a restaurant, neighbors said.

Dalton was arrested and is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center. He is being charged with:

  • Failure to Immediately Stop Vehicle at Scene of Accident Involving Death
  • Failure to Immediately Return and Remain at Scene of Accident Involving Death
  • Failure of Vehicle driver in Accident to report Death to Nearest Police

All lanes of Rockville Pike reopened by 7:45 a.m.
