4 Die in Capitol Heights Crash After SUV Hit Utility Pole

What to Know

  • The victims are Samuel Moss, 35; Shyra Harris, 24; Antonio Price, 27, and Jasmine Davis, 21, police said.

Four people were killed Thursday night in a crash in Capitol Heights, Maryland, police said.

All four were in an SUV headed west on Sheriff Road between Cedar Heights Drive and Cypresstree Drive around 10:30 p.m. when the driver swerved to avoid an approaching car that was making a left turn, Prince George's County police said.

"Up ahead there is another car trying to make a left turn,” Prince George’s County police spokesperson Jennifer Donelan said. “When the Chevy Tahoe approaches that car, there is a maneuver where the driver tries to get around the car that's waiting to make the left turn."

The driver lost control and the SUV struck a curb, rolled over several times and took out mailboxes before hitting the utility pole and taking down power lines, police said.

Police identified the victims as 35-year-old Samuel Moss, 24-year-old Shyra Harris, 27-year-old Antonio Price and 21-year-old Jasmine Davis. Moss was driving.

Police initially thought two of the victims had been pedestrians but later determined they had been ejected from the car.

Pepco was at the scene Friday morning working to restore power to the poll.

Police are investigating the accident and say it could take months to complete. There were witnesses, but police still want to talk to whoever was in the car making the left turn.

Speed may have been a factor.
