Capitol Christmas Tree Heading to D.C.

The tree selected is a 65-foot white fir

The Capitol Christmas Tree is officially on its way to D.C.

Crews cut down the 65-foot Sierra White Fir Monday morning and carefully placed it onto a trailer with a custom built cradle to support it.

The tree came from the Stanislaus National Forest in Fresno, California, and will now begin its cross-country tour to the District, making several stops along the way.

The Capitol Christmas Tree is also known as The People’s Christmas Tree, and will be placed in front of the Capitol Building.  Each year, a different national forest supplies the Capitol's tree.  This is the fourth time the tree will come from California.

After December, the National Park Service grinds it into mulch, which is spread around the Capitol gardens.
