Don't Be Alarmed: Maryland Nuclear Plant to Test Sirens on Monday

The county government wishes residents and neighbors in Calvert and Dorchester counties not panic because of the scheduled drill.

Residents in Calvert, Dorchester and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland should not be alarmed if they hear sirens sounding around the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant on Monday, Dec. 3.

The plant is set to conduct a three-minute test of all sirens within a 10-mile area at noon that day to ensure that the system is operational.

The full test of the emergency alert and sirens also is intended to make sure the public is aware of the alert, which sounds in case of an emergency at the plant.

“Citizens are asked to remember the scheduled testing and relay information to friends, family and neighbors,” St. Mary’s County officials said in a news release. “If the sirens sound at any other time, residents should tune to one of the local radio stations for information and instructions.”

The alert from county officials comes after an active shooter alert was accidentally sent out Tuesday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, prompting people to shelter in place as police responded.

A spokesperson later confirmed that the alert of an active shooter was a false alarm, and was not intended to be a drill.
