Drunk driving deaths jump 60 percent on New Year's Eve. That's more than any other night of the year. To help prevent such tragedies, the SoberRide program is once again offering free cab rides home for impaired drivers.
You don't have to be falling-down drunk to take advantage of the program. People who drive while buzzed also pose a danger, reminds a spokesperson for the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, which sponsors the free rides.
The SoberRide number is 1-800-200-TAXI. AT&T customers can just dial #TAXI. Rides are available between 10 p.m. New Year's Eve and 6 a.m. on New Year's Day.Any fare under $50 is free.
A few rules:
- You MUST be 21 or older.
- The taxi will only take you home -- forget about stopping at another bar or restaurant.
- All calls must originate in the District of Columbia; Montgomery and Prince George's counties, or the cities of Rockville, Bowie, College Park, Gaithersburg, Greenbelt or Takoma Park in Maryland; Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William and Eastern Loudoun Counties in Virginia; or the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas and Manassas Park in Virginia.
