3 Taken to Hospital After Bus Crashes Into Building in Arlington

Three people were taken to a hospital after a bus crashed into a building in Arilington, Virginia, Wednesday evening.

The crash happened just before 6 p.m. in the 400 block of 12th Street South near Army Navy Drive, the Arlington County Fire Department said.

The bus driver, one pedestrian on the sidewalk and a person inside a business were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to a statement from the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission. No passengers were onboard the bus at the time of the crash, according to the fire department.

The OmniRide bus appeared to strike a vehicle on 12th Street South. After the crash, the bus ran onto the curb and struck the wall of a business on the first floor of the Lenox Club apartment building, PRTC said.

"In addition to the investigation by Arlington authorities, PRTC and First Transit also will perform a review to determine what happened and if the crash was preventable. The internal investigation will include interviewing witnesses, reviewing video of the incident, checking the vehicle and reviewing the bus operator’s driving history," PRTC said.

Fire officials were waiting for a structural engineer to assess the damage to the building.

Police said 12th Street South was closed between Eads Street and Army Navy Drive.
