Bullet Fired in the Air Kills Boy, 7, in Chesterfield

Chesterfield County police say a 7-year-old boy has died after being shot in the head by someone who apparently fired a gun into the air at a Fourth of July celebration near Richmond.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Brendon Mackey was walking with his father near a restaurant on the Swift Creek Reservoir, where a crowd was gathering for a fireworks display Thursday night. The child fell to the ground, bleeding from the head. He was taken to VCU Medical Center in extremely grave condition.

Lt. Randy Horowitz said police believe the gunshot wound was the result of someone shooting randomly into the air, not an intentional act. Police are trying to find the person who fired the round.
