Brrr! Frigid Temperatures Have D.C. Shivering

Wind chill temps Friday morning could be between -20 and -25

We give up! Winter, you win.

Bone-chilling, teeth-chattering cold deepened in the D.C. area overnight, setting a new record low temperature Friday morning.

Several school districts have announced closures and delays for Friday.

The last time Washington set a record low temperature in February was 45 years ago. Friday's low also beat the record for Feb. 20, 8 degrees, which was set in 1896. The new record is now 5 degrees.

Missing Attachment Storm Team4 meteorologist Amelia Segal found out just how cold it was when she took a wet t-shirt outside.

The bitter cold delayed commuted on both Metrorail and VRE Friday morning.

On Metro, two cracked rails outside the East Falls Church station led to suspended service for about 15 minutes, followed by single-tracking for about two hours. Metro says riders can expect residual delays.

On VRE, multiple trains were delayed up to an hour Friday as maintenance crews tried to fix frozen switches and a gate issue.

And you'll need to add even more layers to what you're already wearing, because it will feel even colder than it technically is.

Storm Team4 says wind chill temperatures Friday morning may be between 5 and 15 degrees below zero. According to the National Weather Service, frostbite can set in within 30 minutes when wind chill temperatures are 20 below.

Prolonged exposure to cold also can result in hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperature. A body temperature that's too low can affect the brain, which makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because the victim may not know it is happening.

A wind chill advisory will remain in effect for the region until noon Friday.

Winter will continue to unleash its fury Saturday; 2 to 4 inches of snow will likely fall in the metro area Saturday afternoon. Areas farther north and west may get 4 to 7 inches of snow.

Sleet and freezing rain will move into the area by Saturday evening.

Travel will be treacherous on any untreated surfaces as temperatures will stay below freezing all day.

Storm Team4 says the freezing rain may change to rain by dawn Sunday and end around noon.

But there is some good news -- spring is only 28 days away.
