The wet start to the year has created the conditions for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Warmer temperatures this weekend could usher in mosquito season.
The season typically runs from March to November, with May to October being the prime months. York County's mosquito control chief Tom Gallagher predicts a "robust" mosquito season. In Hampton Roads alone, 35 types of mosquitoes thrive. Only female mosquitoes feast on blood, which is needed for egg development.
Mosquito control officials advise homeowners to clear rain gutters and empty water from buckets to blunt the spread of mosquitoes.
