Brace for Fare Hike Part 2, Metro Riders

The largest fare increase in Metro’s history went into effect last month.

Get ready for phase two.

The new "peak of the peak" fares take effect Aug. 1.

A 20-cent surcharge will be added to weekday trips taken between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Elderly and disabled passengers who pay with Reduced Fare SmartTrip and Senior SmartTrip cards will see a 10-cent surcharge during the same peak travel periods.

Also on Aug. 1, the cost of three Metrorail passes will increase:

  • The Weekly Short Trip Pass will be $32.35.
  • The Weekly Fast Pass will be $47.
  • The Transit Link Card for MARC and VRE riders will be $102.

There is one way to save money when the fare adjustment kicks in: Metrorail customers who use a SmarTrip card instead of a paper fare card will save 25 cents per trip, like Metrobus users.

Metro said the fare hikes are necessary to help close a $189 million budget gap for this fiscal year. The fare adjustments are expected to generate $108 million.
