A man who made headlines in September when he was ruled ineligible to play high school football because he was homeless shot and killed his girlfriend and tried to cover it up, Prince George's County police said.
Police arrested 19-year-old Jamal Speaks and charged him with first degree murder, second-degree murder, assault and weapons charges in the death of 18-year-old Saniyah Floyd.
Police found Floyd suffering from a gunshot in a bedroom in a house in the 13000 block of Buchanan Drive in Fort Washington about 10:30 p.m. April 7.
Witnesses told officers and detectives she accidentally shot herself, police said.
The autopsy determined the wound could not have been self-inflicted.
The investigation found Speaks illegally bought the gun that day and was playing with it throughout the day, police said. That night, he fired it once and struck Floyd.
He put the gun in Floyd's hand to make it look like she shot herself, police said.
Police said Speaks confessed to his role in Floyd's death.
He is being held without bond.
Speaks was kicked off the Ballou High School football last year because he did not have a permanent address.
A local shelter for homeless youth, Covenant House Greater Washington, heard Speaks' story and offered him a home.
