‘Sickening:' 3-Year-Old Boy, Man Shot in Northeast DC, Police Say

A 3-year-old boy and a man were shot in Northeast D.C. and have been hospitalized, police say.

Witnesses said that many people, including children, were outside on the 1800 block of M Street Northeast enjoying the sunshine when a string of gunshots rang out.

"We heard a barrage of gun fire," ANC Commissioner Kathy Henderson said, calling the shooting unacceptable.

A man was struck by a bullet and the boy was hit in the abdomen. Police said the bullet exited his body.

A good Samaritan used their own car to rush the boy to the hospital. His injuries are considered not life threatening.

The man was taken to a hospital in more serious condition, but his injuries are also considered not life threatening.

Police stopped an SUV with Virginia licence plates and a flat front tire a few blocks away in the parking lot of Eddie's Carry Out restaurant at 18th Street and Bladensburg Road Northeast. Ammunition was found inside the SUV. Police questioned a person that they believe was involved in the shooting.

"The residents in this community are sick and tired of this gun violence," D.C. Council Member Kenyan McDuffie said. "This is absolutely sickening."

Police reported different ages for the boy following the shooting, but confirmed on Tuesday that he is 3 years old.
