Bodies of Woman, Son Found Outside Virginia Home

The bodies of an 84-year-old woman and her son were found early Sunday outside their home.

They have been identified as Viola Cox and her 60-year-old son, Douglas Cox.

Spotsylvania County officials said they were awaiting the results of autopsies in their deaths, but that there was no evidence of criminal activity.

"Our initial investigation of this scene appears to show that Mrs. Cox suffered a medical emergency last night and as her son was attempting to summon aid by utilizing a trail leading to a neighbor's house, he also suffered a medical emergency," said Sheriff Roger L. Harris in a release. "The results of this tragic set of circumstances left two family members deceased."

An investigation determined that both had been outside the home for most of the night, Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said.

Much of Virginia has been experiencing an Arctic blast with sub-freezing temperatures and gusting winds.

Pearce said the autopsy will reveal if the weather played a role in their deaths.
