A driver who police said fatally struck and killed a bicyclist late Friday morning has been charged with second-degree murder.
D.C. police say 25-year-old Robert Earl Little Jr. was driving a stolen van and refused to stop for officers in the area of Benning Road and Florida Avenue NE about 10 a.m. Friday.
Little was speeding while going westbound on Florida Ave., police said. When he reached the 12th Street intersection, he failed to stop at a red light and struck a blue Hyundai that was going southbound on 12th Street, according to police.
Police say Little kept driving and crossed over the double yellow lines, striking a cyclist in the eastbound lanes of Florida Ave. before striking a tree.
The cyclist, 54-year-old David Salovesh, died at the scene.
Little was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The Hyundai driver was not injured.
