Child Recovering After Falling Out of Window in DC

A child is recovering after falling out of a window in Southwest DC.

This accident happened at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday on the 900 block of 3rd Street SW, a few blocks away from Arena Stage.

Fire officials say the child fell less than 10 feet and is expected to be OK. The child's age was not released.

Earlier this month, a 3-year-old boy in Farifax County, Virginia, died after falling through a window.

After that tragic accident, the Fairfax County Police Department shared the following safety tips for parents:

  • Keep play areas and furniture away from windows.
  • Keep windows closed and locked, especially when children are playing in the area.
  • Consider installing hardware that only allow the window to open a few inches.

Child safety advocates said parents can also install window stops or window guards.

"A window guard actually protects the child from being able to get direct access to the window as a whole," said Tareka Wheeler, with Safe Kids Worldwide.
