Attempted Murder Suspect May Have Been Trying to Steal Unborn Child

A woman charged with attempted murder in the stabbing of a pregnant woman may have been trying to remove the child with a box cutter, Prince George's County investigators said.

Veronica Deramous, 40, allegedly met the victim, who was near full term, last week at Queen of Peace Missionaries of Charity, a soup kitchen and shelter for pregnant women on Wheeler Road in southeast D.C., according to D.C. police. Deramous convinced the pregnant woman to go to her Suitland, Md., apartment, authorities said.

The pregnant woman was bound to a chair with duct tape for several days, investigators said. On Saturday, Deramous allegedly tried to cut the baby out of the victim.

The pregnant woman apparently managed to escape later when the suspect was asleep. A neighbor saw the wounded woman and called 911.

Deramous was arrested in Arlington, Va., on Prince George's County warrants Sunday evening.

The baby was delivered by cesarean section. Both she and her mother are healthy. The mother named her newborn daughter Miracle Sky.
