Fairfax County Police removed a skimmer device from an ATM at the Inova Fairfax Hospital Cardiac Care Center on Wednesday, after users lost likely thousands of dollars to thieves, they said.
Thieves likely attached the skimmer to the ATM in late August, authorities said. A customer spotted the device Wednesday and told hospital security, who called police.
Victims say their ATM card numbers were used to get cash from other ATMs, as well as buy groceries and expensive coffees.
Thieves use skimming devices to steal card numbers by placing them over actual card slots on banking machines. The devices often include a small video camera to record users entering their PINs. Police recommended that you cover the keypad when your other hand as you enter your PIN.
Financial crimes detectives are investigating four cases, but believe there may be more victims. Anyone who used an ATM in the lobby near the gift shop from late August through Sept. 12 should check their bank statements carefully.
