Ask Liz: What Happens To Recycling

What really happens to recycled items in DC once they leave the blue bin on the curb? The DC Department of Public Works says:

  • Fleets of recycling trucks visit over 100,000 households in the District every week.
  • After the recycling materials are hauled into the truck, they are taken to a transfer station where they are all consolidated.
  • Then, they are hauled to a contractor. The contractor sorts, processes, and eventually reuses the materials that you recycled.
  • The Department of Public Works wants to encourage residents to make sure to recycle cardboard... like tissue boxes and shoeboxes.
