Some University of Virginia students could be packing heat while packing their bags full of books.
Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli claims UVA does not have the authority to ban people from bringing guns into school facilities, as long as they have concealed carry permits.
That isn't sitting well with some.
“The classroom and university campuses are not a place for firearms,” said Lori Haas, spokeswoman for The Virginia Center for Public Safety. “They are not unsafe places and there is no need to carry a firearm anywhere on a campus at any time.”
On the other hand, Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, said: “Our attorney agreed with the attorney general that policy for universities and colleges similar to UVA’s do not affect concealed handgun permit holders.”
Cuccinelli’s ruling has other Virginia colleges reviewing their weapons policies.
George Mason University officials believe their policy won’t need to be changed. It restricts weapons in campus buildings and at campus events, which the officials say is specific enough.
