Arlington Dedicates Highway Overpass to State Trooper

State and local officials are dedicating a highway overpass in Arlington County to the memory of a slain state trooper.

The Arlington County Board and the Virginia General Assembly have designated the Interstate 395 bridge over South Glebe Road in honor of Jacqueline Vernon, who was the first female and first black Virginia State Trooper to be killed on duty.

A ceremony to dedicate the bridge is being held Wednesday in the Arlington County Board Room.

The 32-year-old Vernon was killed in 1988 when she was struck by a commuter bus after stopping another car for illegal use of the carpool lanes on I-395.
