Amtrak Adds Train Between Richmond, Washington

RICHMOND, Va. -- An additional Amtrak train starting in December will provide service between Richmond and Washington.

As part of the agreement announced by Gov. Tim Kaine on Wednesday, Virginia will invest $17.2 million over three years.

The new train, along with previously announced daily service between Lynchburg and Washington, are part of the first phase of planned passenger rail improvements in Virginia.

Once the plan is fully implemented, it is estimated to remove 1.4 million cars from highways each year, officials said. It also will save more than 8.3 million gallons of fuel and eliminate 66,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.
