Alexandria Police Seek Help Identifying Suspected Thief

Alexandria police are asking for the public’s help identifying a robber who seems to target female shoppers.

They released a photo of the man believed to be responsible Thursday.

The incidents allegedly began in November 2009 and took place at department stores, clothing stores and restaurants in Alexandria, Loudoun County and Fairfax County in Virginia and Montgomery County and Charles County in Maryland.

Police said a man takes a wallet from a victim’s purse while she shops, then uses her credit cards immediately. Authorities believe he may have had an accomplice who distracts the victim.

The man is described as a black, approximately 35 to 45 years of age, 5-foot-9 to 6-feet tall with a medium to stocky build and full beard.

Anyone who recognizes the man in the picture or anyone with additional information about these cases is asked to call Alexandria police at (703) 838-4797 or the Crime Solvers tip line at (703) 838-4858. Witnesses can remain anonymous.
