AAA Makes Travel Projections for D.C. Area

AAA Mid-Atlantic is projecting more than 1 million people in the Washington metro area will travel more than 50 miles or more from home during the Independence Day holiday weekend.

AAA said Friday that 1,002,200 people are projected to travel that far over the holiday. That's a 2 percent increase in the number of people in the area that traveled during the holiday last year.

About 87 percent of them are expected to travel by automobile. AAA says that's the highest level since at least 2001.

The Fourth of July holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, July 2 to Sunday, July 6.

This year is the 200th anniversary of the writing of the national anthem at Fort McHenry in Baltimore.
