Young Girl Suffers Second-, Third-Degree Burns

Child attempted to extinguish flames by jumping into shower

A 10-year old girl has suffered second- and third-degree burns over her torso.  She was playing with a lighter and her clothes accidentally caught fire.

She was at home with her mother at 1653 C Street, NE, at the time.

Police told News4 that no foul play is suspected.

After she caught fire, the girl attempted to extinguish the flames by jumping into the shower, local fire officials reported. 

She was taken to a local hospital with critical burns over her mid-chest down to her waist.
