Wrong-Way Driver Strikes Trooper on I-395, Virginia State Police Say

Police say a driver fled a crash scene by illegally turning into oncoming traffic on Interstate 395 in Northern Virginia before hitting a second vehicle, this one belonging to a Virginia state trooper.

Virginia State Police say 61-year-old Lavern Paige, of Alexandria, was driving north on I-95 when she crashed into another vehicle about 12:21 p.m. Tuesday and fled the scene by entering the I-395 express ramp.

From there, Paige drove her car up the ramp, broke through a gate, and headed north in the southbound express lanes, police said.

A state trooper was driving in the lanes when he saw Paige's 2013 Chrysler 200 driving against traffic, police said. The trooper tried to pull over the driver, but she sideswiped his patrol car before finally coming to a stop, police said.

Paige and the trooper were both taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure.

The driver in the first incident was not hurt.

Paige has been charged with reckless driving.
