Workers Sickened at Bethesda Business

Hazmat team investigating; chemical fumes believed to be the cause

BETHESDA, Md. -- Several employees at a Bethesda business became ill Friday during an apparent hazmat situation.

Several people were overcome by fumes around 12:30 p.m. Friday at a business at Artery Plaza near Wisconsin Avenue, officials with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue said.

The building was evacuated while hazmat crews investigated what was causing the odor.

Investigators believe painters using a chemical called varsol, and varsol fumes made the employees feel sick.
