Woman Stuck in DC Traffic Delivers Baby in Car Downtown

One of D.C.'s newest residents just has no patience for the traffic.

A woman gave birth to a baby girl in downtown D.C. while on her way to the hospital during the Thursday evening rush.

D.C. Fire and EMS said the woman was in labor when she called 911 at 17th and C streets Northwest about 6:40 p.m.

She and a man who was with her had to pull over to the side of the road right in front of DAR Constitution Hall.

Firefighters said they were shocked to see the woman holding the baby in her arms in the front seat of the car when they arrived just a few minutes later.

"This is unique in that [the call] came out as a pregnant woman having contractions and the next thing we know is that the baby is delivered," firefighter and EMT Nick Miramontes said.

The firefighters and medics got the mother and child to the hospital and said the pair were doing well.
