A woman was shot and killed while walking into a Silver Spring church Sunday morning, according to Montgomery County Police.
Investigators believe her estranged husband is the shooter.
Patricia Ann Simmons Kelly, 52, was walking through the parking lot of the Peoples Community Baptist Church on Norwood Road in Silver Spring, Md., when she was approached by her estranged husband, police said.
Police said Kevin Kelly, 52, then shot his wife in the chest because he was upset she was starting an independent life without him.
Three off-duty police officers were inside the church at the time of the shooting. They rushed outside after hearing the gunshots. Two of the officers immediately started CPR on the victim. The third apprehended Kelly, police said.
The woman was taken to the hospital where she died.
Kelly is expected to be charged with multiple , including first-degree murder, are pending.
