Man Sought After Sexual Assault in Wooded Area in Rockville

UPDATE: A suspect has been arrested, police say. Check here for the latest story.

A woman was sexually assaulted in a wooded area of Rockville, Maryland, just before midnight Tuesday, and now police are looking for her attacker.

Police say the woman had been walking from the Shady Grove Metro station and had gotten about a mile away when a man physically assaulted her. The man then forced her off the sidewalk of Route 355 (Frederick Road) near West Gude Drive and into a wooded area, where he sexually assaulted her, police said.

The woman was able to escape and ran to a nearby business at 15 West Gude Drive, where she told a security guard about the attack. Officers responded shortly after 12:10 a.m.

"This woman just getting off public transportation, probably coming back from work or school, wanting to get to her destination, was attacked without provocation right in this area," said Montgomery County police spokesman Paul Starks.

Police believe the woman did not know her attacker. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police were not able to confirm if a weapon was used during the assault and only a vague description of the suspect was provided.

CORRECTION (Oct. 3, 2018, 2:35 p.m.): An earlier version of this story said the attack happened early Wednesday. Officers responded early Wednesday, but the attack happened just before midnight Tuesday.
