Arrest Made in Attempted Sex Assault on Metropolitan Branch Trail

Juvenile arrested after woman was attacked in daylight

Police have arrested a juvenile male in the attack of a woman in broad daylight on the Metropolitan Branch Trail in Northeast D.C.

Police said the suspect approached a woman and assaulted her with the intent to commit a sexual offense, but she was able to escape. It happened Monday between 12 and 12:30 p.m. on the trail in the 1800 block of 4th Street NE.

The assailant fled the scene on a dark-colored bike.

Police have not given the suspect's exact age, but said he lives in Northeast D.C. and has been charged with assault with the intent to commit first-degree sexual abuse.

The Metropolitan Branch Trail is an eight-mile stretch that runs between Union Station and Silver Spring, Maryland. Several incidents, including robberies and beatings, have been reported on the trail in the past. Last year, security was enhanced on the trail after a 37-year-old Silver Spring man who was riding his bike on the trail was beaten by almost a dozen teenagers.
