Woman Killed by Falling Tree Branch in Loudoun County

A woman died Wednesday after she was hit by a falling tree branch in Virginia, police say.

Melanie Brose was clearing fallen tree branches in Leesburg when a large branch fell on her, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said.

She was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. She was 52, the sheriff's office said in an update.

The D.C. area weathered two days of rain, freezing rain and snow in the previous days. The sheriff's office did not immediately say if the weather was believed to be a factor in Brose's death.

Stunned neighbors said Brose often worked outdoors.

"She was always out working in her yard. Loved flowers, loved trees," neighbor Mark Peyton said.
