Montgomery County police investigate deadly pedestrian accident

Montgomery County police have identified a woman killed in a pedestrian accident in Wheaton, Md.

Investigators said Etsegenet Abebe Hurissa, 24, from Silver Spring, Md., was trying to cross the intersection of Georgia Avenue near Regina Drive at about 10:40 p.m. Thursday when she was hit by a car.

Hurissa died at the scene. Police said the car, a silver 2007 Volkswagen Eos, was driven by Carlos Andre Arias, 18. The impact of the accident sent the car off the roadway and into a wooden fence. The car stopped in a backyard.

Rescuers took Arias to the hospital along with a passenger, Pool Bryan Ubillus, 17. Both are expected to recover.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating. So far, no charges have been filed.
