Woman Dead After Dog Attack in DC Home

A woman died Sunday night after a dog attacked her inside a home in Southeast D.C., police say.

D.C. Fire and EMS responded to the home in the 1300 block of Dexter Terrace SE just before 7 p.m.

Medics took the woman to a hospital, but she died a short time later.

Police identified her as 55-year-old Angela Smith of Southeast D.C.

The Humane Rescue Alliance responded to the house after the attack and took the dog out of the home. The dog could be seen resisting and it tried to bite one of the officer who brought it out of the home.

Multiple workers were eventually able to get the dog into the shelter's van using a blanket to lift its hind legs.

Neighbors told News4 they had seen the woman walking the dog in the past and never saw it acting aggressively.

A spokesman for the Humane Rescue Alliance says the dog was removed from the property and humanely euthanized. A D.C. police spokeswoman said the dog was a pit bull.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the woman's cause of death.
