Smoking Materials Started Deadly NE DC Apartment Fire

Fire investigators believe smoking materials started a fire that killed a woman inside a northeast Washington, D.C., apartment.

Fire crews were called to an apartment building on the 4000 block of 8th Street NE about 8:30 p.m. Saturday to investigate an electrical odor. They located a small fire in the bedroom of an apartment on the first floor.

Officials said a woman was taken from the apartment, and crews performed CPR on the victim. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The victim has not been identified.

Investigators believe smoking materials started the fire. It appears the apartment did not have functioning smoke detectors.
