Woman Injured in Home Invasion, Attempted Sex Assault

Police Chief Cathy Lanier calls attack "alarming"

A 24-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being beaten, kicked her and stabbed by a man who forced his way inside her apartment Friday.

Police believe the man went door-to-door handing out flyers advertising a party. When the victim opened the door for him, he forced his way inside and tried to rape her, police said.

“For all the types of assault that we see, this is one of the ones that really is alarming to all of us, because not only did he force his way inside of someone's home, but after trying to sexually assault this woman, he tried to kill her,” Police Chief Cathy Lanier said. “So he's very dangerous. We want to get him off the street.”

The victim remaining in intensive care as of Tuesday evening. She was stabbed and slashed numerous times, including on her face.

The attack happened at Rhode Island Row, a new luxury apartment complex that opened over the summer near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station.

Police released surveillance video footage of a suspect. Anyone who knows anything about the case or recognizes the man in the video contact police at 202-727-9099 or text a tip to 50411.

The man may have injured his hand during the attack, police said.
