‘Senseless Act of Rage': Police Investigating Clarksburg Hit-and-Run

A man died in Montgomery County Friday afternoon after being hit by a driver who fled the scene -- and a witness said the driver and victim argued before the crash.

The man was walking on the 23000 block of Sweetspire Drive in Clarksburg, Maryland when he was hit by a driver, Montgomery County Police said. Officers arrived on the scene about 12:20 p.m. and the victim was declared dead on the scene.

A witness said the victim had been walking a German shepherd when he and the driver began to argue.

“I was driving by that road with my windows down and I saw two men there, and one of the men was cursing at the other man very loud,” she said. The woman passed the men and then saw one man get into his car and speed up, she said.

The 20-year-old driver reportedly left the scene and called his mother, who called police about 20 minutes after the fatal crash. Officers responded to a home about three miles away, on Amber Ridge Circle in Germantown, and found the driver and the car, police said Friday night in an update.

The victim's family identified him Friday evening as William McDaniel, 21.

"The McDaniel family requests privacy as they come to understand the tragic events that occurred this afternoon. Their son William was taken from them in a senseless act of rage that need not have happened," the family said in a statement.
