Work to add two lanes along Interstate 95/495 south of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge corridor will require reducing the Capital Beltway traffic to one lane Friday through Sunday.
The area involved is from west of Branch Avenue to west of Telegraph Road, a distance of about nine miles. Motorists should find other routes because delays could extend up to three hours.
The work will add two through lanes to the current three lanes on the Inner Loop and split traffic into through and local lanes that will improve traffic flow and safety. New ramps to the Inner Loop through lanes will open this weekend, providing access from Maryland Route 210 North and U.S. Route 1 North and South.
Details of this weekends work are as follows:
- Friday, 9 p.m., to Sunday, noon: Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) lanes will be reduced from four lanes to one from west of Maryland Route 5 to west of Telegraph Road.
- Ramps to the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) from I-295 South, National Harbor and Telegraph Road North will be closed (Note: Motorists leaving National Harbor after Cirque du Soleil and other activities will be able to access ramps until 11 p.m.)
- Ramps from the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) to National Harbor, Church Street, U.S. Route 1 (North and South) in Alexandria will be closed
- Maps of detours are available on www.wilsonbridge.com. There is an interactive map under "lane decider" where motorists can put in origin and destination points and find which lanes would be best to use.
If the weather is bad, heavy rains or snow, the work will be postponed until the following weekend.
