Flood Watch

The rain and ice have left thousands without power

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning for Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia until 6 p.m. Saturday.

The flood warning is also in effect for Frederick, Md., until 10:20 p.m. Sunday.

In Maryland, the warning affects Anne Arundel, Prince George's, Charles, St. Mary's and Calvert Counties, as well as Southern Baltimore.

In Virginia, the coastal flood warning is now in effect for Prince William, Manassas, Fairfax, Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Stafford and King George. In addition, the flood warning is effect until 9:24 p.m. Sunday for Brunswick.

According to the NWS, a flood warning or coastal flood warning means flooding is occurring or is imminent and residents should be alert for rising water.

Route 1 in Beltsville was closed in both directions around Ammendale Road because of flooding, according to WTOP.

Over one inch of rain and a third of rain has fallen across the area, NBC4 meteorologist Chuck Bell said. An additional quarter of an inch is expected through this afternoon.

Foggy conditions and poor visibility also remain in areas. Drivers are warned to use extra caution when driving today. The NWS also suggests using alternate routes if you encounter flooding on roadways.

Meanwhile, the rain and last week's snowstorm have left more than 71,000 customers in Virginia and West Virginia without power, according to local officials.

A spokesman with Appalachian Power says the company was down to about 44,000 outages from the last weekend's snow storm, but numbers have gone back up due to Friday's rainy weather.

A Nicholas County, W.Va., official told the agency that a porch was ripped off of a house and landed on the roof. Officials in Webster County, W.Va., also reported that a roof was blown off of a house.

In Southwest Virginia, there are reports that wind has knocked down trees and power lines as well as roof damage to a local tractor supply building in Tazewell. The Virginia Department of Transportation also said Friday that the southbound portion of Virginia State Route 741 in Bedford County is impassable due to flooding.

The wet weather should pass by this afternoon, according to Bell. Temperatures should rise to the mid-40s Saturday.

Sunshine is expected to return Sunday and early next week.
