Water Main Break Leads to Sinkhole on Bladensburg Road

Water main break happened several days ago

Drivers traveling from Route 450 Bladensburg Road to Route 1 ran into delays Wednesday morning.

The issue stemmed from a 12-inch water main that broke several days ago, WSSC told News4.  The break was isolated, meaning that some small valves were shut down so that water service could be restored. Then workers temporarily paved over the area with the intention of returning to fix it later.

However, the patch of the roadway failed Wednesday morning. The result was a sinkhole in the middle of the road that closed westbound Bladensburg Road at Route 1.

The sinkhole was filled and covered with steel plates, and the road reopened about 3:30 p.m.

Repairs to the main will be conducted on a nighttime schedule, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
