Water Main Break Disrupts Traffic in DC

WASHINGTON -- Commuters should expect delays during the Tuesday afternoon rush hour due to repairs on a water main break in northwest Washington, D.C. officials said.

Crews arrived about 7 a.m. Tuesday at 16th Street northwest between R and S streets, where the break occurred, said Pamela Mooring, a spokeswoman with D.C. Water and Sewer Authority.

Workers did not indicate a cause, but in general, drastic temperature changes can be a factor in pipe breaks, Mooring said.

Only one lane northbound and one southbound lane on 16th Street were open during the rush, said D.C. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Karyn LeBlanc. Northbound drivers should use 14th, 15th or 18th streets instead, she said. People traveling southbound should use 14th, 17th or 18th streets.

The repairs were expected to be done by 6 p.m., Mooring said.
