East-West Highway Repairs Ongoing After Water Main Break

Repairs to a major Montgomery County highway are underway after a water main break Thursday.

East-West Highway is shut down between Glengalen Lane and Jones Mill Road in Chevy Chase.

Early Friday morning, the water main was repaired and residents got their water back. But significant road restoration is still underway.

Portions of the road collapsed just before the start of afternoon rush hour, resulting in a large hole. The sinkhole was at least 6 feet deep in some places, officials said.

Galen Reser, a neighbor who lives near where the break happened, was in his kitchen when he heard something strange.

"All of a sudden, I heard a series of pops. I thought maybe somebody was walking on my roof," Reser said. "Then I looked out the front door, and I literally saw a river of water."

A pipe from the break landed 10 yards away in Reser's yard, he said.

The 13 miles of East-West Highway connect Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

The water main break disrupted traffic, with many drivers trying to find a work-around. Some bus passengers walked more than a mile to get to the next unaffected stop heading east.

The break also left about 20 WSSC customers in the area without water.

Once the water main is repaired, the road must be fixed.
