Sinkhole Nearly Swallows Car on Main Street in Ellicott City

A car was nearly swallowed by a sinkhole in Ellicott City, Maryland, early Wednesday after a water main broke.

The water main broke on the 8600 block of Main Street. The flowing water created a sinkhole beneath a car parked on the side of the road. Police were called to the scene about 3:20 a.m.

No one was inside the car at the time, and no injuries were reported, police said.

Police have asked people in the area to move their cars.

Main Street is closed between Rogers and Klein avenues.

There is no estimate on when the water main or the roadway will be repaired.
