Walter Reed Doctors Call for Delay In Move

The medical staff at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in northwest Washington is calling for a delay in the move to the region’s military hospitals, the Washington Examiner reported.

The Pentagon is shutting down Walter Reed in August as part of the mandatory base realignment plan. Several military hospitals will be consolidated.

Patients and staff at Walter Reed will be transferred to medical centers in Bethesda, Md., and Fort Belvoir, Va.

Doctors and nurses at Walter Reed said the new locations will not be ready to properly care for current patients plus all the wounded troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan unless the move is delayed, according to the Examiner.

Congress is working on legislation that could delay the move by one year.
