Volcano Hampers Octogenarian's Birthday Wish

British visitor ready to fly home from Dulles

The volcanic eruption is the latest in a series of mishaps that has left an 84-year-old man trapped in the D.C. area.

William Thue is trying to get back to London for his 85th birthday and his wedding anniversary.

On Wednesday, his shuttle to the airport was rear-ended, and he ended up in the hospital. He was fine but by the time he got back to Dulles most flights to Europe were cancelled because of the eruption.

The airline -- Virgin Atlantic -- has put him and other stranded passengers up at the Dulles Hilton, where they're stuck until flights resume. Now everything is up in the air except his flight.

But Mister Thue says he's taking it all in stride.

"I'm living in a great place, good food," said Thue. "I'm not too happy about that person that ran into the van. But beyond that I'd say that I'm one of the lucky ones."

The manager for Virgin Atlantic at Dulles is keeping in constant contact with Thue's  wife and son.  For Thue it's good news that has turned his string of bad luck.

Thue said he's keeping an eye on reports on the volcano and when he'll be given the "all-clear" to fly.
