Virginia Woman, 19, Missing; Luggage Found in Ditch

A 19-year-old Virginia woman is missing after family members dropped her off at a Metro station to catch a flight at Reagan National Airport.

Katelin Michelle Akens was last seen Saturday when her family dropped her off at the Franconia-Springfield Metro station so she could catch a flight, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said. According to her family, she never reached her destination.

Akens' luggage was found in a drainage ditch on River Road, near the Fredericksburg city limit, police said. Money, her cellphone and some clothes were missing.

“The circumstances surrounding this case are suspicious enough to warrant our full investigative efforts in attempting to locate Miss Akens," Sheriff Roger L. Harris said in a statement.

Akens has blonde hair, blue eyes, weighs about 120 pounds and stands 5-foot-4, police said.

Her mother said her daughter was excited to return to Arizona, where she was about to attend beauty school.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call police at 1-800-928-5822 or 540-582-5822, send SEE911 to CRIMES via text message or visit www.spotsylvaniacrimesolvers.org.
