Virginia Man Drowns Trying to Retrieve Car Keys

A Nassawadox man drowned while trying to retrieve his car keys, Virginia State Police said.

State police Sgt. Michelle Anaya says 30-year-old Troy Sental Tankard entered the water at a fishing pier in Wardtown in Northampton County and didn't resurface.

Tankard's car keys had been thrown into the water earlier with wet clothing, Anaya. He was trying to retrieve the keys when he drowned.

The incident occurred early Monday morning. Tankard's body was recovered around 8:55 a.m. Monday 20 feet from the pier.

Anaya says no foul play is suspected and the incident is being treated as an accidental drowning.
