Police say Timothy R. Howerton of Richmond stole the car following a confrontation with an officer

A man who died after he crashed a stolen Richmond police car into a building has been identified.

Police say Timothy R. Howerton of Richmond stole the car following a confrontation with an officer Monday afternoon.

Howerton, 32, pulled a gun after the officer approached him, authorities said. The officer took cover behind his car, and Howerton jumped into the vehicle and fled the scene, they said.

He drove the car through a gate and then crashed into the side of a vacant warehouse. The car caught fire, and he died at the scene.

Police say Howerton was wanted, but haven't provided details.

The officer wasn't injured.
