Authorities have recovered the body of a Virginia man who died while swimming in the Potomac River near Harpers Ferry.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police said Joshua Carr, 25, of Hamilton, Va., was swept downstream by a strong current and went beneath the water's surface.

Carr was swimming with Jennifer Furselle, 22, of Purcellville, Va., when they encountered the current. Furselle tried unsuccessfully to help Carr. She then swam toward the shore and called out for help.
